System Engineer Needed

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

El Dorado Technologies, LLC, requires a system engineer to supervise maintainance, modernization, and updates to our internal Information Technology infrastructure and maintain the infrastructure of our clients and customers.

The successful candidate must have a passion for technology and be eager to help create a positive work environment and collaborative creative process among geeks, suits, tradespeople, tenants, and homeowners.

Although this is an ideal opportunity for a recent college or university graduate seeking excellent experience, all qualified applicants will be considered.

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES

Under general direction but sometimes without clear guidelines, and while documenting new processes and procedures, the system engineer will be responsible for supervising routine management of servers, desktops, laptops, embedded systems, and network devices, and oversee initial system build and configuration, including:

Firmware and driver updates on Dell PowerEdge servers, Latitude and Precision laptops, Apple iMacs, and various other white box PCs
Devuan GNU/Linux, Linux Mint, various other Linux flavors, and MacOS operating system installation, configuration, and administration
Proxmox hypervisor and management console installation, configuration, and administration
Developing templates, processes, and procedures for installation of OS and application software on bare metal, virtual, and cloud-based machines
Troubleshooting and replacement of various PC and server hardware components
Baseline network infrastructure installation, configuration, and administration, including:

NTP, DHCP, DNS, LDAP, Kerberos, VPN, SMTP, SNMP, NFS, CIFS, and related protocols and network services
Certificate requests, installation, and management

Apache HTTPD server installation, configuration, and administration
Postfix configuration and management
PostgreSQL and MariaDB installation, configuration, and administration
Ubiquiti UniFi network gear installation, configuration, and administration
Raspberry Pi-based embedded systems installation, configuration, and administration
Monitoring and alerting systems installation, configuration, and administration
Various one-off systems installation, configuration, and administration

Additionally, the system engineer will troubleshoot, remediate, resolve, or mitigate when one of these systems suffers from poor performance, application or hardware failure, or other common issues.

The system engineer will be responsible for maintaining up-to-date business records about these systems (access, asset, configuration, and change management as well as issue tracking and knowledgebase updates) using appropriate software tools.

Further, the system engineer will configure, document, and monitor proper backup and restore tests and troubleshoot when they are unsuccessful.

Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

A BS/BA in information technology; computer science; software, electrical, or mechanical engineering; or equivalent is required. More education is better.

At least one of A+, Network+, Linux+ or equivalent certification is required. More than one is preferred.

Experience with troubleshooting common computer malfunctions on enterprise hardware is required.

Experience with one or more cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP, etc.) is required.

Experience with Linux using both SystemD or traditional init systems is required; experience with others is preferred.

Experience with installing and maintaining applications on Linux using at least two of Debian, Red Hat, or Suse package management as well as at least two of Flatpack, Docker, Kubernetes, Snap, or other container systems is required; experience with more is preferred.

Experience with the command line, common text editors (vi), and other utilities on Linux is required. Significant scripting experience with Bash, Dash, or similar shells is required.

Experience with TCP/IP networks and protocols and experience managing VLANs and VPNs is required.

Experience with network security concepts and managing firewalls and similar security tools is required.

Experience with email protocols (SMTP, POP3, IMAP, DKIM, DMARC, SPF) is required.

Applicants must:

be proficient or trainable in common software applications (word processing, spreadsheets, data entry, email, etc.);
have excellent communication skills, including on the telephone, in person, and in written form;
have patience and empathy with difficult people and situations;
receive sometimes vague instructions with poise and be able to diplomatically request additional clarification when conflicting requirements or priorities arise;
recognize the inflection point between asking essential clarifying questions and needing frequent remedial instruction;
have an ability to both make sound independent decisions and use initiative when appropriate.

Additionally, applicants must have a temperament enabling them to be productive under pressure and the discretion to properly handle a wide variety of confidential information.

The best candidate will also have excellent record-keeping, note-taking, and prioritization skills. A large vocabulary also helps.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

You must:

be able to stoop and bend and have sufficient dexterity to pick up small objects (screws, clips, nuts, etc.).
have balance sufficient to climb a stepstool while reaching over your head to grasp high objects.
have strength and stamina sufficient to lift and carry up to 15 pounds routinely, up to 30 pounds occasionaly, and up to 40 pounds rarely.
have hearing sufficient to listen and understand oral instructions delivered in a conversational tone or over poor telephone connections.
be able to climb stairs to the second floor of a typical apartment or commercial building.
have vision sufficient to operate a computer or handheld device in varying lighting conditions as well as read hand-written notes.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

You must:

be able to pass a drug screen.
be able to pass a basic background check.

OPTIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

Bonus points will be awarded if you:

have experience with a variety of hand tools;
are familiar with BSD, Windows, MacOS, Android, iOS, and other operating systems;
have experience with low-voltage wiring, AC power, UPSes, and other electrical systems.

Extra bonus points will be awarded if you understand:

the fundamentals of protocols in the TCP/IP/UDP family; or
how 802.11b/g/n/ac/an, Bluetooth, and/or ZigBee work;
Insteon, Matter, or similar protocols.

HOURS, AVAILABILITY, and WORK LOCATION

Initially, the successful candidate must be available to work in the office five days per week. After 90 days of continuous employment, the candidate must be available to work in the office at least two partial days per week while the remainder may be worked remotely, depending on the needs of the business. Employees are expected to record eight hours of work, five days each week, regardless of work location. Typically, business hours are Monday through Saturday between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. with the exception of an occasional and exceptional late night or weekend. The specific days worked in office each week will be subject to negotiation from time to time; moreover, I am reasonably flexible on the schedule. This role is subject to being part of an on-call rotation, depending on the needs of the business.

After 90 days of continuous employment, you may be able to work remotely on a pre-determined schedule; however, many of the duties and responsibilities of this role have a component requiring physical presence. Regardless of where you may work on any given day, you must have reliable transportation.

COMPENSATION

$19-25/hour depending on demonstrated skills and experience, plus mileage reimbursement and cell phone allowance.
