Junior System Engineer Needed

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

El Dorado Technologies, LLC, requires a junior system engineer to maintain, modernize, and update our internal Information Technology infrastructure and assist in maintaining the infrastructure of our clients and customers.

The successful candidate must have a passion for technology and be eager to help create a positive work environment and collaborative creative process among geeks, suits, tradespeople, tenants, and homeowners.

Although this is an ideal opportunity for a college or university student seeking excellent entry-level experience, all qualified applicants will be considered.

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES

Under general direction and within clear guidelines, using documented processes and procedures, the junior system engineer will be responsible for routine management of servers, desktops, laptops, embedded systems, and network devices, including:

The junior system engineer will also be responsible for initial troubleshooting when one of these systems suffers from poor performance, hardware failure, or other common issues.

The junior system engineer will be responsible for maintaining up-to-date business records about these systems (access, asset, configuration, and change management as well as issue tracking and knowledgebase updates) using appropriate software tools.

Further, the junior system engineer will ensure that proper backups and restore tests are successfully completed.

QUALIFICATIONS

A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Some college is preferred. More education is better.

At least one of A+, Network+, Linux+ or equivalent certification is required. More than one is preferred.

Experience with troubleshooting common computer malfunctions on consumer hardware is required. Similar experience on enterprise hardware is preferred.

Familiarity with one or more cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP, etc.) is required.

Experience with Linux using either SystemD or traditional init systems is required; experience with both is preferred.

Experience with installing and maintaining applications on Linux using at least one of Debian, Red Hat, or Suse package management as well as at least one of Flatpack, Docker, Kubernetes, Snap, or other container systems is required; experience with more is preferred.

Familiarity with the command line, common text editors (vi), and other utilities on Linux is required. Some scripting experience with Bash, Dash, or similar shells is preferred.

Familiarity with TCP/IP networks and protocols is required. Experience managing VLANs and VPNs is preferred.

Familiarity with network security concepts is required. Experience managing firewalls and similar security tools is preferred.

Familiarity with email protocols (SMTP, POP3, IMAP, DKIM, DMARC, SPF) is preferred.

Additionally, applicants must have a temperament enabling them to be productive under pressure and the discretion to properly handle a wide variety of confidential information.

The best candidate will also have excellent record-keeping, note-taking, and prioritization skills. A large vocabulary also helps.

HOURS, AVAILABILITY, and WORK LOCATION

Initially, the successful candidate must be available to work in the office five days per week. After 90 days of continuous employment, the candidate must be available to work in the office at least three days per week while the remainder may be worked remotely, depending on the needs of the business. Employees are expected to record eight hours of work, five days each week, regardless of work location. Typically, business hours are Monday through Saturday between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. with the exception of an occasional and exceptional late night or weekend. The specific three days worked in office each week will be subject to negotiation from time to time; moreover, I am reasonably flexible on the schedule.

After 90 days of continuous employment, you may be able to work remotely two days per week; however, most of the duties and responsibilities of this role have a component requiring physical presence. Regardless of where you may work on any given day, you must have reliable transportation.

COMPENSATION

$19-25/hour depending on demonstrated skills and experience, plus mileage reimbursement and cell phone allowance.
